Against Me! has always been the band for me— that one band you stumbled across when you were 12 and ever since have always found yourself coming back to time and time again, year after year.
After going on an indefinite hiatus due to COVID-19 in 2020, I accepted the fact I’d probably never get to see them live… and then The Handlebar in Pensacola hosted Laura Jane Grace & The Mississippi Medicals for $26 a ticket. Quickest purchase decision of my life.
By all accounts, an absolutely fantastic night— shot entirely on a 50mm lens, my toes against the stage. And I’d like to extend a huge thank-you to DeeDee Kohl, the Handlebar’s house photographer, for strong-arming me into asking their tour manager if I could shoot. (And also to John Gerhardt, the aforementioned tour manager, for approving and later ensuring I received a setlist.)
Leaving the venue, I turned the corner to find Laura hanging out by her tour bus, and I’ll never forget hearing, “Thank you for singing with me.”
